So I posted my imvu shop link to my youtube profile, and 2 of my friends from there got curious and made an imvu account. didn't hear from one, but the other told me about trying to join chatrooms and getting getting instantly kicked out of one, and the other gave him a mic, and he got booted right away after saying hi. I assumed it's because he was wearing one of the female avatars they can get from signing up, and his voice was male, so the room owner freaked out. I tried to tell him about the hangout room, but he was too distracted by all the other room options, plus he was pretty discouraged by the experience all together because of those 2 room owners.
I tried to invite him to mine, he had fun exploring it, but I couldn't move or type fast enough due to all the sudden lag I was experiencing (I was on the next browser where I usually don't lag), so we left. I tried to offer to take him shopping the next day, he's really not interested as the first impression was a bust. I really think the public rooms shouldn't be available for new users, the community isn't mature enough to welcome new members.
Since there are so many loyal members looking for opportunities to volunteer, why not select a team to host public rooms instead of just the hangout room? and lock new users view to just these safe places? I know many older users like making new accounts, perhaps can offer them to connect to their main accounts so they can bypass this and keep the connection private.

it also made his iphone really hot and ate up all his ram. i know I'm use to imvu, but to a new user, this seems pretty intimidating and I'd like to see more people come and stay.

Both Kuvi and Doll are right. IMVU is not for thin skinned people. I'm sorry your friend had a terrible experience. They may have just fallen into the wrong kind of room. It happens. And yes, people can be rude.
What I have found when it comes to new users...Most are on that stupid Mobile App. That is just junk. People cannot really socialize, text or carry on a conversation or carry out simple things like move. It's extremely limited and it always will be. Truthfully, to get the full experience they need to be on the Client. New users also load up all the junk they get from IMVU and their kb's are extremely outrageous when entering room. They cause crashes and serious lags. People don't appreciate that at all.
I think there should be a Welcome Manual for new users that explains the usage and certain places to go. They need to know that people here are not always nice. Why they ever let underaged kids here, I will never know. It should be 18 and up. And they should make everyone get age verified. People complain about being bullied or harassed...constantly. This really isn't the right place for those people. Anyway, everyone should read a manual and agree to it BEFORE they even enter the site. And everyone under the age of 18 needs to stay in their own part of IMVU. I'm just grasping here, but IMVU does need to make some changes.
However, people need to be aware of what may happen. IMVU is NOT a place for kids.

I doubt any mobile users will care to stay on. It's not like being on the computer that you can just chill for hours. Maybe you can recommend them to be on computers instead if they got one so they can stay longer?

Honestly people on imvu have always been rude to new people for no reason. It always been like this sadly your friend will need to be tough. I've join imvu since 2012 and new people have always been bullied.

If someone needs a nanny to shield them from society then that person isn't mature enough to be around society.
IMVU isn't for immature cry babies with a thin and sensitive skin.
